What Causes Hives?

Hives are welts on the skin that often itch and can appear on any body part. They can vary in size from very small to quite large and may eventually connect to form an even larger welt.

Acute cases often result from an allergy but can have many other causes. Blood tests can be performed to determine allergies that may trigger your condition. Schedule a consultation for an evaluation of your skin.

How Do We Treat Hives?

Hive treatment typically depends on the severity of the symptoms. For mild cases, over-the-counter antihistamines such as diphenhydramine or loratadine can help relieve itching and inflammation. In addition, avoiding triggers that may cause outbreaks, such as certain foods or medications, can help prevent outbreaks.

We can prescribe more severe cases corticosteroids or other medications to reduce swelling and itching. It’s important to seek immediate medical attention if hives are accompanied by difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, or if symptoms worsen or last longer than a few days.

What to Expect From Treatment

A hive often goes away within 24 hours or less. New hives may appear as old ones fade, so they may last for a few days or longer. A bout of hives usually lasts less than six weeks. These cases are called acute hives. If hives last more than six weeks, they are called chronic. With proper medication, your condition can be temporarily alleviated, and future breakouts can be prevented.
